Another related fallacy is the idea that free market forces will solve all our problems. If we run out of natural resources, they will become expensive, and our brilliant scientists will find suitable substitutes. If we run out of earth resources, we can start mining the moon or asteroids. The invisible hand of the market is like God, capable of solving all problems if we pesky humans wouldn't interfere with regulations and stuff like that. It's a seductive idea because it means you can ignore any and all problems until the cost of our easily foreseeable problems is the less expensive than the alternative. Further, we can all act in our own selfish interests and yet, something for the greater good will emerge. It's as if we can all shit on a potluck dinner table and the result is beef stew.
