Asking for help when in need is very different from panhandling for a living. If you see the same person day after day, they are not in need; they are practicing their craft.

If you believe panhandling for a living is not a real thing, perhaps you can take a moment to watch this video:

Panhandlers are not in need, and this is not an unwarranted assumption, it's the only reasonable explanation of why the same person would be there day after day.

On the line of unwarranted assumptions is the idea that not giving to daily panhandlers is uncharitable. Any money given to a professional panhandler is money that isn't given to someone who is in genuine need -- unless you are assuming this money would have been spent personally, which is another unwarranted assumption.

Wisdom as a practice is supposed to put limits on the upwelling of compassion. Yes, giving to those in need is the compassionate response, but recognizing the difference between need and a con is wisdom. Panhandling on a daily basis is a con. Giving to panhandlers is not wise.
