Debt was a major cause of WWII. When Germany lost WWI, they had to pay reparations to the allies, which was an enormous debt which could never be repaid. The Germans struggled with reparations, went through a wild currency devaluation, and watched the value of their labors and products go to their old enemies. This created the conditions for Hitler and the Nazis to rise to power by promising to Make Germany Great Again (Not exactly, but MAGA is a parallel fascist slogan). Our late-stage capitalist obsession with debt preservation is not sustainable. More and more workers will quietly quit, or as the Chinese are doing, lie flat and doing nothing at all.
