I think that goes to what Anil Seth has noted in his work that while we obtain sense data from the outside world, the binding action in the brain that creates our internal representation of the outside world is somewhere between 20% and 80% generated by the mind itself. In other words, we have no pure experiences of the outside world, and quite often the majority of what we perceive as "outside" is really generated by the brain.
