Most people mistakenly perceive the self as an object, something tangible that exists in the world. In that respect, there is no self. No matter how hard people have looked for it, nobody has ever found it. We invent concepts like the Soul to hold this illusory self, but that's just another mistaken idea.

The Self is a false noun. It's not an object. The closest language analogy would be a gerund, a verb pressed into service as a noun. There is no Self, but there is the activity of Selfing.

Whenever we believe the self exists moment-to-moment, we are Selfing. It's a persistent illusion, absolutely essential to daily life, but it's an illusion nonetheless. Selfing is a verb -- an activity of mind -- not an object.
