NATO has been encroaching on the former Soviet Union since it abandoned its control of Eastern Europe. When NATO got the Baltic States to join NATO, I'm surprised Russia didn't start a war then since those are direct border states.

People who decry what's happening in Ukraine forget about the Cuban missile crisis, an attempt by Russia to infiltrate one of our border states. We blockaded the island and told the Russians to get out or we would go to war. They blinked and removed their missiles, while we quietly removed our missiles from Turkey a few months later.
