We believe in black holes because the hypothesis explains things we can see and measure including the positions of stars orbiting the black hole. The existence of black holes is inferred from indirect evidence rather than from direct observation. This is nothing like a belief in God that springs from the desire to believe in Him when the evidence or interpretation of events supporting this belief could easily have other, non-Godly explanations.
